THIS IS MY FAVOURITE LINE. For reasons:
1. Benjamin sassy Linus and his deadpan snarky one-liners of awesome.
2. Benjamin LYING Linus who tells lies about his mother (who died in childbirth) just because he can, even though he has nothing to gain through the lie. Other than the pleasure of issuing a snappy one-liner that is also totally false, and getting away with it on both counts. Because Ben will take absolutely every opportunity to mess with someone, even if they don’t know they’re being messed with. That’s his thing.
3. Benjamin gives-no-fucks Linus and his total disinterest in Jack and his problems, who would like to remind Jack of that fact by giving him attitude about being all full of doubt and concern when Benjamin gives-no-fucks Linus is clearly just relaxing with a good read. No one cares, Jack. Least of all sassy LYING gives-no-fucks Linus.
4. Less related to the line itself, more related to the gives-no-fucks attitude: Ben probably should give at least one fuck about this situation, and that would be as it pertains to himself. His nonchalance is all the more interesting when you consider the fact that he has a lot to be worried about here. Because Ben isn’t supposed to return to the island - it’s against the rules. The island rejected him, it doesn’t need him anymore, not like it needs the others. This plane is gonna go down, and Ben is gonna go down with it, and he has absolutely zero reasons to expect to survive that, zero reasons to expect to be protected (and a few reasons to expect to suffer the punishment of death). Knowing how desperately important the island is to him (he only dedicated his life to its service, after all), it may be that Ben would rather die trying to return instead of spending the rest of his life banished. Either this is a suicide run for him, or he’s got some serious cajones tempting fate like this. That’s my Ben. Oh boy.
